Accessible Voting Unit
An Accessible Voting Unit (AVU) is a voting device that has special features for voters who may be unable to vote their ballot in the standard way. This device allows voters to vote independently and with confidence. It has audio assistance, font control, visual color contrast, touch screen input, and input through devices like lap paddles and sip and puffs. The unit prints the voted ballot that is then sealed in an envelope. The voter signs or makes a mark on the sealed envelope then deposits it in a ballot drop box in the same manner as other ballots.
Here are two videos to show how the AVU works:
Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC)
The VAAC updates the plan of outreach strategies for the Mason County Elections Department to provide accessible services to voters that are underserved and with disabilities in our community. The committee is comprised of staff from the Mason County Auditor’s Office and representatives of Mason County’s disabled and underserved community members.
If you have interest in serving on the VAAC, please complete the volunteer form below or contact the Mason County Elections Department at elections@masoncountywa.gov, (360) 427-9670 ext. 470.
