**This information includes most, but possibly not all requirements**

  • Typical Inspections for site built homes
  • Additional inspections may be necessary as required by the Building Official, Fire Marshal, other Mason County Department, or engineer or geologist of record.
  • All construction must conform to the Mason County approved building plans and is subject to field corrections.
  • For more information call the Mason County Building Dept. at (360) 427-9670 ext. 352
Required inspections vary depending on the type of work being done. For example, a propane tank would only require one inspection, where a new stick built house would require, at minimum, five.
To find out which inspections are required for your specific project, contact our office.

How do I schedule an inspection?
Inspections can be scheduled in four ways. A message can be left on our inspection hotline, the staff can take a request over the phone, the request for inspection can be made in person at the building dept. or a request can be made via the website.

What do I need to schedule an inspection?
Inspections will not be scheduled when the permit is not issued, expired, or has fees that are due and not paid. To request an inspection be sure to have the following information ready:

  • Name on building permit
  • Site address
  • Permit Number
  • Type of permit
  • Type of inspection
  • Name and number of a contact person (for confirmation)
  • Request date of inspection

Confirmation of inspection requests
The Mason County Permit Center will confirm all inspection requests received prior to 3 p.m., the same business day. Requests received after 3 p.m. will be processed the following business day. It is important at the time of the request to leave a name and phone number so that we can confirm the inspection. Your inspection request will be routed for the next available date, even if confirmation was not possible. Appointment times cannot be given. Inspections normally occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

I requested an inspection, but have not got a confirmation yet?
In the event you requested an inspection prior to 3 p.m. and have not received a confirmation by 4:30 p.m., please call our office to verify the inspection request was made and scheduled.

I need to cancel my inspection
If you need to cancel an inspection, please call the office prior to 9 a.m. the day of the inspection. If a scheduled inspection is made when you are not ready it could result in a re-inspection fee being charged.

My inspection is today
On the day of your inspection, make sure that the address is clearly posted, the approved plans and orange or green permit card are accessible on-site for the inspectors review. In addition property lines must be clearly marked (new construction, remodels, expansions.), and access to the site must be available (i.e. unlocked gates / structures).

I had my inspection, what are the results?
The orange or green inspection card should bear the initials of the inspector who approved the work and the date the inspection was passed. In the event your inspection fails a correction notice will be left on-site outlining the corrections required before the inspection can be signed off.

Can I discuss my results with an inspector?
Building inspectors are typically available in the office from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. each day and can be reached by telephone. If you have any questions about a completed inspection please contact the inspector who performed the inspection.

Inspection areas
Based on current staffing levels and demand for inspections, different areas of the county are inspected on different days of the week. If you would like to know if an inspection can be done a certain day of the week, please call our office to find out about current inspection areas / schedules. Every effort will be made to accomplish all inspections on days they are scheduled. However, due to unforeseeable circumstances that may arise, inspection schedules may be affected. We will attempt to contact those who have made inspection arrangements if changes or delays are experienced.
