Health Behaviors and Choices
An individual’s unique set of health behaviors and choices include things such as diet, level of physical activity and exercise, smoking, sexual health practices, and alcohol consumption. The health behaviors and choices we make are based on health-related beliefs that we learn and gain throughout the course of our lives. For example, if we are taught and shown from a young age that it’s very important to brush our teeth twice a day to help keep our mouth clean and healthy, we will be more likely to adopt this particular health behavior and continue it in the future. In other words, our health behaviors and habits reflect our personal knowledge, perceptions, and beliefs about health. These behaviors have been shown to account for 30% of our predicted health. |
