Behind in Rent or Utilities? Worried about Eviction?

Mason County's rent assistance program is currently operational per Proclamation 21-09

Eviction Prevention Programs - Contact the following agencies to see if you qualify:

Crossroads Housing 360-427-6919 (households age 25 and older)
Shelton Youth Connection 360-462-0125 (households under the age of 25)

Mason County has received state and federal funds from the Department of Commerce to work with Mason County residents and landlords who qualify for rental and utilities assistance. Mason County subcontracted these funds to Crossroads Housing serving individuals over 25 and Shelton Youth Connection serving individuals under 25. Both nonprofit organizations have offices located in Shelton and Belfair to access this funding support. The organizations will work with each household and landlord to gather the documentation required by the grant. Once the application is complete, payments are typically processed within a week. Tenants and landlords are encouraged to call for assistance.

The eviction rent assistance program has been operating since August of 2020. In July and August of 2021, 195 landlords and public utility companies have been provided a total of $1,051,631 in rent and utility assistance to prevent eviction. On average, 25 landlords and their tenants are being assisted every week. So far, 490 evictions have been prevented with the financial assistance available.

Households with an income under 50% Area Median Income (AMI), and with one or more individuals who are unemployed and have been unemployed for 90 days before their application date are prioritized. Households with incomes up to 80% AMI are eligible.

Overview

Mason County Community Services manages approximately $1,100,000 dollars for housing and homelessness from the local document recording fees, Consolidated Homeless Grant and Housing and Essential Needs Grant. The Homeless Housing Grant Program was created in Washington State by Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill (ESSHB) 2163 on August 1, 2005. The law created a document recording fee on certain documents to be utilized by local jurisdictions to reduce homelessness (RCW 36.22.179). Administration of the grant funds are shared between local governments and the Department of Commerce. This money is awarded through an annual Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
